Technical Developments in the U.S. – The Update
Despite a decline in technical service calls across all manufacturers, German OEMs saw a significant increase in 2017.
Munich –Based on data from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), the consulting firm KBC has analyzed the technical causes of recalls over the past 20 years. Despite a decline in technical recalls in 2017 and a significant drop in the number of vehicles affected (reason: no major incident such as the airbag issue in 2016), the performance of some German OEMs has deteriorated significantly. For example, Mercedes saw a 65% increase in the number of technical recalls, and BMW saw a 69% increase in the number of vehicles affected.
It is interesting to note that, among German manufacturers, relatively few vehicles were affected per recall. On average, about 150,000 vehicles are affected per recall, but for Mercedes the figure is only 30,200 and for BMW 60,300.
Technical service campaigns are divided into a total of 18 modules. The airbag module continues to account for the largest number of affected vehicles. In 2017, there were also significant increases in the number of campaigns involving powertrain-related modules such as the engine/engine cooling system, fuel supply, and drivetrain.
