KBC Consultant Philipp Berger Honored for His Master's Thesis

Munich– KBC consultant Philipp Berger was honored on October 24, 2019, at the German Logistics Congress in Berlin for his master’s thesis on“Data-driven and machine learning-inspired procurement in volatile energy markets.” KBC is delighted for him and extends its warmest congratulations on this achievement.
Philipp Berger wrote his master’s thesis at the Chair of Logistics & Supply Chain Management at the Technical University of Munich. The thesis was preceded by industry projects with a chemical company, which formed the basis for its development. The goal was to develop a data-driven optimization model that determines which futures (derivatives) need to be purchased and when, so that electricity demand is always met while keeping costs as low as possible. The model is based on various feature data, such as price trends for relevant commodities (e.g., coal) or weather forecasts, which are weighted differently to provide an optimal basis for deciding the right time to purchase electricity on the commodity exchange.
His advisor was so impressed with the work that he nominated it to the German Logistics Association (BVL), which has been honoring up to 50 “up-and-coming logistics professionals” each year since 2010 for their outstanding bachelor’s and master’s theses as part of the German Logistics Congress.
