Decarbonization Strategy for an Energy-Intensive Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise
In a world where we are still far from achieving the necessary climate goals, decarbonization is not only an environmental and social necessity for energy-intensive companies, but also an economic challenge. This challenge involves developing a clear and actionable strategy that both reduces current emissions and paves the way for future innovations.

Background
Our client, an energy-intensive medium-sized company, faced the challenge of achieving climate neutrality in its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2045. The goal was to highlight the uncertainties and opportunities for achieving this target through the selection of technologies and energy sources, identify opportunities for innovation, and develop a coherent approach.
Specific task
To achieve climate neutrality in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2045, it was necessary to develop a strategic roadmap with specific work packages and a timeline. A particular challenge was the consolidation and structuring of existing data, which was characterized by manual processes, heterogeneous site technologies, and data collection systems.
KBC's Approach
First, transparency was established by standardizing data collection and the basis for calculations. A modeling tool and dashboard were developed to simulate future reduction measures until the targets were met. A sensitivity analysis helped identify potential savings. Site-specific reduction measures were then derived and modeled across various scenarios.
